Swipe Technologies recently launched their latest budget friendly smartphone Swipe Elite Plus in India which comes up some pretty decent configuration in it at the price of Rs. 6999/- . Swipe Elite plus comes with a 5″ IPS Full HD display from Sharp which is also protected by a Dragrontrail glass and a 13 MP rear camera / 8 MP front camera. Its powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 64-Bit 615 Octa-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz backed with 2 GB RAM, comes with a 16 GB internal storage which is expandable upto 64 GB and also Swipe provides a cloud storage of 100 GB through Swipebox. This device supports different GSM networks like 2G/3G/4G LTE and also supports EVDO and CDMA standards. The device is powered by a 3050 mAH Li-ion battery.
We got an opportunity to play around with this device for some days and here is our detailed review on different sections of the device.

Design and Build: Swipe Elite Plus comes with an Ergonomic Arc design which looks elegant and feels comfortable in hand. The controls are placed at the right place and is reachable easily while operating using the right hand or left. The device is pretty light weight with just 131 grams and the screen to body ratio is just 78%. The device looks incredibly slim with a thinnest edge of 8.9 mm. The device is made of premium Jaquard Polycarbonate with soft-touch matte edge which perfectly fits in our grip. The back panel has curved textures which provides a streamlined look and gives a comfortable grip in hand which helps in one hand operations also. The back panel comes with an Elite Logo inside a metallic looking circle which gives a classic look to the phone. The power button and volume rocker buttons are made of decent quality and provides proper tactile feedback. The speaker grill is housed at the bottom of the device next to the Micro USB charging port which is helpful to hear the audio clearly. The device comes with two capacitive touch buttons (menu and back) with backlit and a home button in middle, all three is below the glass itself which is cool. The device’s interiors has an embedded battery which is non-removable and two sim slots plus a Micro SD slot. For this price at Rs. 6999/-, the build quality of the device is not tacky at all and its very well designed and looks good in hand. This model comes in 2 colors, Ivory white and Midnight blue. We have received Midnight blue colored device as review unit which looks good and decent. Overall, we are pretty happy with the design and build quality of Swipe Elite Plus.

Display: Swipe Elite Plus houses a 5″ Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS display  with ViDi technology which gives density upto 480 dpi and the energy-efficient screen that gives 40% more colors than a normal LCD screen for brilliant graphics and gaming even under direct sunlight. The display is manufactured by Sharp and the display is protected with Dragontrail glass. The display is really good on this device when compared to the Swipe Elite and has a lot of improvements, the color reproduction is clear and bright. We didn’t face any issues operating the device even under bright sun light and also didn’t feel any stickiness nor the device attracts much finger print which is commendable. The display is pretty good for the multimedia usage and gaming also. The dragontrail glass protection works perfectly too and with the key scratch test which we performed on that, we could barely see any scratch on the screen and keeping inside the pocket with coins, keys and other mobiles also didn’t create any scratches on the display which is pretty good. Also, the display survived some casual drop tests, keeping the device upside down on rough surfaces etc., Overall, we give 9/10 for the display which Swipe Elite plus houses. Swipe has come a long way and provided lot of improvements in display department.

Hardware and Performance:  Elite Plus is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 64-Bit processor which has MSM8939 chipset and the processor is clocked at 1.5 GHz. Coupled with 2GB RAM and a 16 GB ROM, the device has a decent configuration in CPU department too. Coming to the performance of the same, it does handle the multi-tasking smoothly and we observed little sluggishness with Windows and transition animations set to 1x scale. We had to turn it off for some brisk transitions between the screens and while opening any applications. The device handles the multimedia content effectively and could play Full HD videos and 3D content effortlessly. Also, the gaming on the device is pretty decent when we set the graphic settings in games like Asphalt to low or medium. The device warms up fast even with around 15 to 20 minutes browsing on Wi-Fi or carrier network and of course when we play graphic intensive games for around 30 minutes in continuous stretch. In a simple test while trying to extract a zip file with 1.7 GB, it took around 20 minutes to extract the compressed archive which is kind of sad performance. The call quality on the device is pretty decent and clear. In GPS functionality test, device locks to GPS perfectly in some seconds and navigation is perfect too. Performance wise, we hope the device could handle lot more better with subsequent OTA updates from Swipe. We say this because of the impeccable configuration which this device houses and we are sure company would investigate the drawbacks, test more and fix them.

Camera: The Star of the device is the Camera which comes with it. The device houses a 13 MP Rear camera and a 8 MP front camera with f/2.0 aperture lens, both manufactured by Samsung. The rear camera supports different focus moves like Auto, infinity, macro, video continuous, continuous and manual modes. The front camera supports fixed focus. As we mentioned at the start of this paragraph, the camera is the star of the device which clicks some pretty amazing pictures in natural light, low light and even clicks some real good images using front camera also. The color reproduction is real and perfect. Captures the detail very well. While clicking pictures in HDR mode, the app does take a while to click the shots, but that’s not too much to complain about as we ge some pretty good shots.  We can shoot videos at Full HD resolution and gives a decent output too. The camera app supports time-lapse mode, panorama, manual mode, face beauty and best thing is it also embeds a QR code scanner using which one can scan the QR codes effortlessly and browse through the links or content extracted from QR codes. Below are some samples clicked using Swipe Elite plus. Click to see the full resolution picture.

Battery: Swipe Elite plus comes with a 3050 mAH Li-ion battery which is a pretty good one again for the price which this device is available for. Gives a decent 4 to 4.5 hours screen on time and stays upto 32 hours while on internet via carrier network as well as wi-fi. Battery drains rapidly during long calls and when playing games for elongated stretch.  Again, for this price, housing a decent capacity battery gets a thumbs up from our side.

Software and Features: On OS front, Swipe Elite Plus comes with an Android Lollipop 5.0.2 version topped with their own OS called Freedom OS which gives plethora of features and customization for end users starting from reducing the icons and fonts size to choosing their favorite themes which are available to download for free. There are many features one can customize in Swipe launcher ranging from App drawers column and rows count, transition effects, text color, background color, choose between IOS style or Android L style folders, Hide unwanted apps, change color theme to taste, different app animation stiles, show are disable status bar, choose whether to display labels or not for the icons etc., The Swipe search functionality is also pretty good where in one can do the keyword search to launch their favorite apps, look in the contacts, messages or  to search that content from web related to the keyword entered. Its one point of search place to access whatever content you want to look either on device or on web which is really useful and one don’t have to keep scrolling the screens to launch their favorite app out of 100’s of apps installed or to search the messages and contacts endlessly while making calls or looking for old content on the device. Also, the lock screen has access to launch some apps like Music, Calculator, Selfie Camera, QR code scanner and add contacts shortcuts which are pretty well thought and useful. This UI has tuned a lot well to suit different user experiences. The only thing which we don’t like is the Ads popping up randomly when we are performing some operations, they are not from any games installed or from any 3rd party app which we install, its coming from the OS itself when connected to network. If Swipe can fix that, would be really useful for user experience. Also, one more settings which is useful and missing is the ‘Preferred network mode’ selection under mobile networks where it doesn’t have option to choose ‘GSM only’, we have either 3G/2G (auto) or 4G/3G/2G (auto) options only. The GSM Only settings are useful for the users who are using prepaid connections and have limitation in spending on the data connection. One more thing which Swipe can do in their next updates is providing a better keyboard instead of standard AOSP keyboard which doesn’t have swype or continuous input function which is really useful.

Verdict: This device is really a buy-worthy for the specifications, hardware, build quality, software and especially camera which are bundled for just Rs. 6999/- and any device in that price range isn’t offering in the current market in India. There are little compromises as we highlighted in the paragraphs above, barring those, Elite Plus is definitely a good budget phone to buy if anyone has strict restrictions to buy a smartphone under 7000/- or 8000/- INR.
