We have been playing around with the latest RedMi 2 from MI India which they recently launched and I must say its a No-nonsense phone with some amazing specifications and features on it. Its one of the decent, simple and well designed phone to attract masses and being priced at 6999/- its a steal for a middle-class people in India. Beauty powered by beast. The RedMi 2 is powered by Snapdragon 410 64-Bit Processor with the support of 4G Dual Sim support, meaning it supports 4G and 3G on both SIM card slots unlike other dual-SIM phones in the market where second SIM slot only supports 2G . It comes with 4.7″ IPS HD Display protected by AGC Dragon trail glass which is a shatter and scratch-resistant display glass which literally needs a heavy force to bring a dent or scratch on the same. I tried with keys, scissors etc., and it tolerated all the bruises without a scratch on it. Also, the display is fully laminated which you can’t even notice that its there. The device just weighs 133g which is lighter and thinner than its predecessor. The soft touch back feels perfect in hand. This device also supports USB On-The-Go (OTG) which allows one to connect their USB flash drive as well as peripherals like keyboard or even a gamepad. I tried OTG on some other phones in the same budget which doesn’t work on them. Though 8 GB Flash storage on board in this device, I definitely would wish a 16 GB at least on this device to utilize it to full potential and by installing lot of applications and games. Here are some of the pictures of this smartphone in different angles.

The device comes with a 8 MP BSI f/2.2 rear camera and a 2 MP BSI front camera which is pretty decent for this range and clicks some decent pictures even in low-light. Below are some picture samples taken using RedMi 2.

The Redmi 2 is powered by a 2200mAh battery which is good enough to hold charge for around 36-48 hours with moderate internet and phone calls usage. It can play upto 8 hours or video non-stop .

Along with the decent hardware specifications, this phone comes with Android kitkat 4.4 overlayed with MIUI 6 which beautifies the phone and there are lot of features which are user friendly, simple and with no-nonsense UI.

Some of the important and top MIUI 6 features are: The UI has more than 5000 themes support from MIUI theme store. The beautify feature which applies 36 smart filters to selfies. The bulk move and delete feature helps moving multiple applications across screens or delete them in one single action effortlessly. The priority notifications is one user friendly feature where you can choose which notifications is very important for you and you can allow them to float across the top screen and tuck away unimportant ones neatly.

The next feature I am awe about in MIUI 6 is its simple and delightful animations which are embedded in the Screen lock, recent menu, clock, timers, alarm and in entire UI. Pretty decent and amazing. One of my favorite is the animation which bursts the app into its own colours when we uninstall it. I installed around 100 apps just to enjoy this amazing animation on this phone 🙂
Cloud is the new mantra in these days and what if you don’t have enough space to store pictures locally, you can store the pictures in MI cloud and its available in single timeline, its as good as looking at pictures on local device.
The next amazing feature is per app data restrictions which is a must in the Indian ISP scenario where there is lot of fluctuations in the data charges and you never know when your bill goes high. You can limit the data charges by individually controlling which apps should use mobile data, Wi-Fi or even international roaming data which gives you a full control on the device and its data usage. No more secret losses of your valuable data pack.
The cleaner app does a regular sweep and deep clean to get rid of unnecessary files and other residuals which hogs up the disk space.  Having a very less native storage, this kind of feature is must on RedMi 2 and Xiaomi is brilliantly embedded this feature in MIUI 6.

The next one which I want to write about is the Record in-call audio feature, when our politicians itself promote Sting recordings to capture proof, and its kind of useful in real life scenarios too, we can record any phone call directly with single tap and it saves as a MP3 file. Very useful feature to record your loved ones voices as well as if you want to gather and store some of the conversations you have as proof.
Xiaomi has put user experience in mind so much that, they even have a solution for accessing flashlight quickly when you go into the dark places or suddenly the electricity goes off. You can quickly access the Flashlight from the lock screen with long press on the home screen. One doesn’t have to keep on scrolling through the apps and try to find out flash light.

The next one is the mail conversation view which displays emails as a thread conversation with familiar chat-style bubble previews which makes your emails too entertaining instead of legacy boring emails.

The last important feature which is must for Android users who are paranoid about the unwanted permissions which different application seeks while installing them, we can finely tune the access to the different permissions using Permission Manager built in MIUI 6 , you can have a total control on the app installation and decide which access to be provided or not to any application.

These are just some of the top features on MIUI 6 on Redmi 2, there are 100’s of other features which could be explored on this device and Xiaomi promises to take in all or any feedback whether positive or negative about their UI and act on them accordingly. Xiaomi doesn’t follow Sell and forget mantra and they do care about their customers post sales too and even the company’s bosses are pretty much accessible for any suggestions or improvements either in UI or their devices which makes Xiaomi an Unique Smartphone manufacturer and as I mentioned initially they make absolutely no-nonsense phones.

Overall, I am pretty much impressed with the device and its features. One cannot expect this phone to beat many other high end smartphones based on the benchmark tests, but lets face it, you can expect a super high configuration smartphone at this price range. Xiaomi has clearly targeted the middle-class audience and tried to make smartphone affordable for even a person earning low salaries and of course this phone is a steal for college going people who saves money from their pocket-money (if at all they still do 🙂  For this price at Rs. 6999/-, its a steal and no wonder the phone gets sold out in seconds during their sale on Flipkart.

Thanks for reading and do share your thoughts / or feedbacks about the device in the comments section.
