Gionee S Plus was launched in November 2015 and priced at Rs. 16999 INR. We got an opportunity to play around with this device for a month or so and here is our detailed review on this device.
A quick glance of the specifications: Gionee S Plus is powered by a 1.3 GHz Octacore Mediatek MT6753 Processor with Mali T720 GPU. The device comes with a 5.5″ AMOLED display with resolution of 1280 x 720 and 267 PPI. It has a dual SIM card support and comes with a 16 GB internal memory and operated by a 3 GB RAM. The interal storage is expandable upto 32GB using a MicroSD card. The device comes with a 3150 mAH Li-Po Battery and weighs only 158 Grams. The devices houses a 13 MP front camera and a 5 MP front camera with f2. aperture. Gionee S Plus comes in 3 colors which are Dark Blue, White and Golden.
Design:
Gionee S Plus is a  sleek device  with just 7.5mm thickness and comes with a diamond patterned back panel. The device’s screen comes with a polished finish and ergonomic design gives the device a beautiful look.  The volume rockers and power button are available on the right side of the device while a 3.5 MM audio jack is on top and USB Type C connector at the bottom of the device for faster charging and data transfer purposes.  USB Type C connector is an ultimate addition on the Gionee S Plus. The tactile feedback of the buttons are impressive and the buttons are easily reachable using our thumb.  Though its a 5.5″ device, it can be easily operated with just one hand and the device feels very light in hand and can be operated easily. The device is not slippery even with glossy finishing in back, thanks to the textured back panel.  The back cover is removable and even battery is replaceable which is really useful. Since the back covers comes with a glossy finishing, its easily bound to the scratches and it kind looks odd as those scratches are clearly visible. Its better to use the Transparent Protection Cover which comes inside the box for free.  Barring that, we are totally impressed with the device’s design.

Display:

Gionee S Plus comes with a large 13.97cm (5.5) HD Amoled display which is extremely bright and full of color. Sometimes, that itself gets frustrating experience. We have to bring down the contrast and brightness a little do make it look pleasant.  The touch sensitiveness is great  and has very good viewing angles. The sad part is the touch screen is a finger print magnet, easily attracts fingerprints and smudges which needs constant cleaning.  Apart from that, the display gives absolutely pleasure while watching movies, playing games and while browsing the internet.  The display is protected with corning gorilla 3 glass which is scratch resistant and it easily  handles and protects the screen from  the simple scratches which might happen from your keys, coins, etc., and also one can confidentally keep an additional mobile facing this device screen without worrying about the scratches happening on this screen. We are impressed with the display with little disappointment about the smudges and fingerprint attraction.

Hardware and Performance:

Gionee S Plus is powered by an Octocore 1.3 GHz Mediatedk MT6753 Processor backed with a 3 GB RAM which makes it a powerful device . The performance is seemless without any lag even with multiple applications opened in the background. We didn’t feel any sluggishness in the operations which we performed while our testing.  The device is capable of playing HD games and movies effortlessly and we are totally impressed with it.  At any point of time there is always around 1.5 GB free RAM is available for better performance.   The device scored a decent 37214 score in Antutu benchmark test.   The audio on this device is great too with incredible DTS sound support on the same. The sound is really loud and clear even in a crowded room.   The device is not having any heating issues even while playing long hours of games and movies which is commendable.  Overall, we are impressed with the performance of the device.

Camera:

S Plus comes with a decent 13MP in rear and a  5MP camera in front with  f2.0 aperture, fast focus (0.3s), fast capture (0.46s) and lossless zoom. The Camera is a decent performer and could click some amazing picutures. The camera software is really good with lot of features and filters embedded in it and also the Pro mode is a great addition to the device in order to click some professional grade pictures. The device clicks some great pictures even in low light by using the settings available in the pro mode.  Outdoor shooting with the camera is absolute bliss and the device is easily capable of clicking bright and great pictures. We totally loved the camera performance and has no complaints with it. Check out some sample pictures clicked using Gionee S Plus.

Battery:

Gionee S Plus is supported with a 3150 mAH Li-Po battery which is a great addition again for a device of this size.  Even with the slimmer form factor, Gionee has involved a great battery backup which is commendable. Not only with the hardware front, Gionee has put in additional effort in tuning the battery performance in software front also by including the smart power consumption features and settings inside the device which saves battery juice for longer performance and availability.  In our testing, we could play two movies of around 120+ minutes long with brightness set to 100%. And the screen on time gave almost 8+ hours in automatic brightness mode and while in Wi-Fi network. With 2G network, Wi-Fi and moderate call usage and all the social media accounts/emails in sync, the device’s battery backup was 24+ hours and with 4G always on with all the social media accounts/emails in synce, the device gave a battery backup of 18 hours.  Geekbench battery test results gave 7.43 hours of Screen on Time.

Software and Features:

Gionee S Plus comes with Androd 5.1 Lollipop OS overlayed with their own Amigo UI version 3.1. The UI comes lot of freewares and bloatware like Du Battery Saver, Spiderman, Bubble Bash, Asphalt Nitro, Real Football 2014, Gionee Xender, Twiter ,Whatsapp , Facebook, UC Browser, Du Speed Booster, Amigo Paper, Game Zone and Danger Dash pre-loaded on it which are useful and if you find it too much, they can be uninstalled too.  The Amigo UI gives a nice User experience by allowing the user to bring up the menu and settings when we swipe from bottom to top, this gives easy access to the settings and controls while operating in one hand. It would take a little time to get use to this after using the traditions top down approach for accessing the settings etc.,  But, once you get use to this, it makes our life easy in operating the device.  The Amigo UI 3.1 gives lot of settings using which one can fine tune the device to any extent as per their requirement. One can disable the apps access to different personal content like contacts, sms, call logs etc., and also disable applications from auto-starting when you powerup. These settings helps saving battery as well as your data consumption.  There are lot of smart gesture options like Pause alarm, Smart vibration and smart bright screen.  Also, there is a black screen gestures available using which one can open any configured applications from the lock screen itself by drawing some gestures. For ex: Drawing C will open camera,  e for contacts, M for music player, O to open phone list and so on, one can create a cusom gesture and assign any application to that also.  One more notable feature on Amigo UI is Chameleon which helps creating a live theme by choosing the colours around you.  The application gives you to choose any colour around you as background. To use this, open the app and it opens the camera and has two circles on the screen that will capture the background color, now you can pick your favorite color, preview it and apply it as your home background.  This feature is not very exciting though, but I liked it much.   Another notable feature on Gionee S Plus is the Extreme mode, when you turn on this mode, it will shutwodn all the functions on the device allowing only messages, calls, contacts list and clock and with this the device battery can last longer on a single charge.

Verdict:

Gionee S Plus is a powerful device with a good build quality and a great design which gives decent performance for the price which its offered.  It has lot of pros and some cons as you read in above points.  Overall, its a decent buy if the price could be brought down to around 12,000/- INR.
