Today we are going to write about Coolpad Dazen 1 smartphone which is  new entrant to Indian Market from China in order to compete with likes of Xiaomi, Yu Yuphoria and Lenovo A6000+ which sports similar configuration and specs. Most importantly the 4G supported devices in the price range from 6000/- to 7000/- INR. Out of the lot, Dazen 1 has competitive price of Rs. 5999/- and available for Sale on Snapdeal.

Design: Coolpad Dazen 1 comes in two colors which is Snow white and Sandstone Black. The one which we got for review is Snow white. The design of the device is simplistic and looks elegant. It weighs around 150 gms and sports a 5″ display. The dimension of the device is 141*71.5*9.3mm. It looks bit big, but its comfortable in hand and the back panel comes with matte finish which makes it non-slippery and feels good. We can take out the back panel and replace battery, insert sim cards which supports 4G, 3G and 2G networks. The devices has a micro SD card slot too which supports upto 32 GB. As in Dazen X7, this device too compromises volume rocker on the left side of the device and power/unlock button on the right. At the bottom, it has the micro USB charging port and on top a 3.5 mm audio jack. Very simplistic design and its a best buy for the people who would love to explore the world of smartphones. Looks sturdy and can be rough handled which is suitable for Indian conditions. The polycorbonate back panel which is used on this device is pretty good which is kinda scratch resistant too. Also, we observed that it doesn’t get stains even when we handle the phone in dirty hands.  So, one don’t have to worry about buying a white phone fearing about the odd look of stains on their phones. For the price which we are getting this device, I would say the design of the device definitely would win hearts.

Display: Dazen 1 sports a 5″ HD IPS display with screen resolution of 1280×720. The display is bright and vivid. One can enjoy their multimedia content like videos, pictures on a very bright display along with a 178 degrees viewing angle.  We can even observe a minute detail in an image which is on the screen.  Watching movies on this device is fun too with a 5″ display. Since the device is backed with a 2 GB RAM and operated with Qualcomm 1.2 GHz Quadcore processor, there is absolutely fun to watch even HD movies without any issues on the phone. We are very impressed with display too.
Hardware and Performance:  Dazen 1 comes with 1.2 GHz Quadcore 64-bit Qualcomm (QC8916) processor which is the best in the category backed with a 2 GB RAM. If this device had a 16 GB internal ROM for OS and applications, it would have been a steal for customers. But, this comes with only 8 GB like any other competitor phones which gives around 5 GB space for the user’s usage for installing applications, games etc., which we think is very less. But for a normal user with average smartphone usage for standard applications in a day to day life, this should be suffice. Performance wise, this device is smooth and lag free. We tried to play HD movies on this device and it played them flawlessly without any lag. Also, transition between the screens, multitasking is smooth on the device. With multi-window feature on this device, we can simultaneously operate two applications at a time using split screen and still it scores well. Though the device performed well for normal testing, the Antutu benchmark test scored very less on this device with score of 20218 and comes in the bottom of the list after Xiaomi MI2.
Camera: The Dazen 1 comes with a 8 MP rear shooter with a f/2.2 lens and LED flash and a 5 MP front camera for selfies and video chat. The other camera features include HDR, smile mode, multi-shots, night mode, pro mode for clicking professional quality pictures. The selfies which clicked on Dazen 1 has this beautify feature which makes you look good once it clicks the picture. There are lot other options to choose like Sound & shot, create GIF’s, Picture zoon, Picture focus, Capture smiles etc., One can use their imagination to click better and amazing quality pictures using Dazen 1.

Some sample pictures taken using the camera on Dazen 1. Click on the thumbnail for full resolution.

Battery: The device comes with a 2500 mAh battery is pretty good enough for the device of this cadre. Also, the device gives extended power up-to 50% with coolpad’s patented technology where in the device uses less cores of the processor for some specific applications which actually doesn’t need entire quad core or octa core of the processor which eats up the battery power. This technology
brilliantly used the limited cores for certain applications like GPS etc., which may run pretty well even on single core making it utilize less battery. I still remember people disabling GPS, data connection  to save power on move which would not be the case on Dazen 1 where they can freely keep everything on.  The device consumes less power and we never observed device heating up or something when we do long operations on the device via internet, watching videos etc., which is pretty amazing.
Software and Features: The Coolpad Dazen 1 comes with Android Kitkat 4.4.4 out of the box overlayed with CoolUI which is highly customizable from the user. It gives lot of options to customize the wallpaper, add widgets to the home screen and there are many transitions available for the home screen which are pretty amazing. Also, the UI is very simplistic and as I said in the Dazen X7 review, even a novice user to the smartphone world can easily start with the device without much hassles.  Easy access to menus, settings etc., makes the UI intuitive and less complicated. One can sort and create the folders as per the functionalities of the applications for quick access.  Sharing, emailing the pictures videos etc., are very simply and easy.  There are some smart controls and wake up gestures using which one can invoke many important applications like camera, music,  whatsapp, browser etc., from the locked screen itself using some gestures like sliding down from top, drawing
different letters like ‘w’, ‘m’, ‘c’, ‘e’, ‘o’ to open whatsapp, music, camera, browser and Facebook respectively. Overall, we really like the UI and we really couldn’t find any bug in the interface which we wanted to report as per the verbal challenge with we took with the Coolpad product heads 🙂 We have created a hands-on video of the UI operation using screen recorder option which is available on
the device, we will upload it very soon on our YouTube channel.  To invoke the screen recorder, one can just press the volume up + power button which will start recording the screen and you can stop
the ‘power’ button to stop the recording.

Price: As we mentioned earlier, the device is priced at Rs. 5999/- and its available for sale on Snapdeal which is very competative . When the device lauched in May, they had announced the price as 6999/- but eventually the price was reduced to stay in competition which is actually good in the competitive Indian market which gives the choice to the consumer to choose.
Verdict: Based on the usage from us, we are quite impressed with this device and we would definitely would recommend to try out this device if you are looking for a budget smartphone which is gives a good multimedia experience, and for the regular usage too. And the specs which this device offers for the price 5999/-, its definitely a worthy device to buy.
